How Revealing Does a Boudoir Photoshoot Have to Be?

One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that you have to wear lingerie—or hardly anything at all—to have a boudoir photoshoot.

You don't.

Boudoir can be as revealing or as covered as you want it to be. Some women love the idea of beautiful lingerie or implied nude portraits. Others feel much more like themselves in jeans, a bodysuit, an oversized sweater or a simple tank top.

The amount of skin you show doesn't determine whether a photograph is beautiful. What matters is creating photographs that feel like you.

You Don't Have to Wear Lingerie

Lingerie may be one of the first things that comes to mind when you think about boudoir photography, but it's only one option.

A pair of jeans with a favorite bra or crop top can create a completely different look. An off-the-shoulder sweater can feel soft and intimate while keeping you relatively covered. A bodysuit can provide more coverage while still creating beautiful lines in photographs.

You can even incorporate a favorite dress, bridal pieces, a button-down shirt or something meaningful from your own closet.

You don't have to choose an outfit because it looks like something you're supposed to wear for boudoir.

Choose it because you love the way you feel in it.

Covered Can Still Be Beautiful and Sensual

A photograph doesn't need to show a lot of skin to feel intimate.

Sometimes what isn't shown makes a photograph especially beautiful.

The way a sweater falls from one shoulder, the shape created by a fitted outfit, the expression on your face or the way light falls across you can completely change the mood of an image.

Lighting, posing and expression are often much more important than how revealing your wardrobe is.

What About Implied Nude Boudoir?

Implied nude photography creates the appearance of nudity while strategically using posing, sheets, shadows, camera angles or your own body to keep intimate areas covered.

For some women, these become their favorite photographs because they're simple and artistic.

For others, they're not something they're interested in at all.

Both choices are completely fine.

Implied nude photographs are simply another option available to you—not something you have to include in your session.

You Can Choose Different Comfort Levels During the Same Session

You don't have to decide that your entire photoshoot will be conservative or revealing.

Your session can include several different looks.

You might begin completely dressed in jeans and a top, change into a bodysuit or lingerie later, and decide toward the end whether you'd like to try something a little more daring.

Starting with an outfit that feels familiar can also give you time to become comfortable in front of the camera before moving into other looks.

Your photographs don't all have to tell the same story.

You Don't Have to Decide Everything Before Your Photoshoot

It's perfectly okay to arrive with ideas without knowing exactly what you'll ultimately want to photograph.

You may bring something you thought you'd love and discover that another outfit photographs even better. You may arrive certain you don't want a particular style and then become curious about trying it.

Or you may know exactly where your comfort level is and stay there throughout your entire session.

The important thing is that the decision remains yours.

Boudoir Should Feel Like You

There isn't a minimum amount of skin required to have beautiful boudoir photographs.

You don't have to become more daring than you want to be, and you don't have to recreate photographs you've seen someone else take.

Your session can be romantic, glamorous, playful, casual, bold, conservative or a combination of several styles.

The best boudoir photographs aren't necessarily the most revealing ones.

They're the photographs where you recognize yourself—and love what you see.
