Different Styles of Boudoir Photography: Finding the Look That’s Right for You
Boudoir photography doesn't have to fit into one particular look. A session can be romantic and feminine, dark and dramatic, playful and casual, glamorous, artistic—or a combination of several different styles.
One of my favorite parts of planning a boudoir session is helping each woman create photographs that actually feel like her. Some women arrive knowing exactly what they want, while others aren't sure where to begin. That's completely okay. You don't have to choose just one style, and your entire session doesn't have to have the same look.
At Bella Chic Photography, I photograph a wide variety of boudoir styles at my Puyallup studio and on location, serving women throughout Tacoma, Puyallup and the surrounding area. Here are some of the different looks we can incorporate into your session.
Shower Boudoir
Shower boudoir combines water, movement and beautiful lighting to create photographs that can feel both dramatic and effortless. Depending on what you wear and how the images are styled, a shower set can range from playful to sultry.
A bodysuit, lingerie, a simple white shirt or other wardrobe pieces can completely change the finished look. It's also a fun way to add something unexpected to a session that includes more traditional bedroom portraits.
Casual Boudoir
Boudoir doesn't require lingerie. Some of the most personal photographs can come from clothing that feels completely natural to you.
An oversized sweater, tank top, T-shirt, favorite pair of shorts or even a cowboy hat can create a relaxed style that feels sexy without looking overly styled. Casual boudoir is especially appealing if you want your photographs to capture a more everyday, approachable side of your personality.

Bridal Boudoir
Bridal boudoir brings elements of your wedding into your session. Lingerie, veils, white sheets, wedding accessories or other meaningful details can be incorporated to create photographs that feel romantic and personal.
Some women create a bridal boudoir album as a wedding gift for their partner, while others simply want to document this particular chapter of their lives.

Fun & Flirty Boudoir
Not every boudoir photograph needs to be serious or sultry. Fun and flirty boudoir lets personality take the lead.
Playful expressions, movement, casual clothing and unexpected wardrobe choices can give your photographs a completely different energy. This is a great style for women who want their session to feel lighthearted, youthful and a little less traditional.
Outdoor Boudoir
Taking boudoir outdoors creates possibilities you simply can't recreate inside a studio. Water, trees, fields and other natural surroundings add texture, movement and atmosphere to the photographs.
Outdoor boudoir can feel adventurous, romantic, earthy or even ethereal depending on the location, wardrobe and lighting.
Implied Nude Boudoir
Implied nude photography creates the appearance or suggestion of nudity without necessarily revealing everything.
Sheets, strategic posing, shadows and careful camera angles can create photographs that are intimate and artistic while allowing you to decide exactly how much you want to show.
As with every part of a boudoir session, your comfort level determines how far we take the look.
Denim Boudoir
There's something effortlessly sexy about denim.
Jeans, cutoffs, overalls or a favorite pair of worn-in denim can be paired with lingerie, a crop top, tank, bralette or even nothing underneath. Denim boudoir tends to have a relaxed, confident feeling and is an easy way to add variety to your session.
Seasonal Boudoir
Seasonal boudoir incorporates the feeling of a particular time of year into your photographs.
A cozy sweater and warm textures can create a beautiful fall or winter look, while holiday-inspired sets can be playful, glamorous or romantic. Seasonal elements don't have to overwhelm the photographs—the focus is still on you.
Retro Boudoir
Retro boudoir takes inspiration from past decades while allowing us to put a modern spin on the finished photographs.
Wardrobe, hair, makeup and styling can all help create the look. Depending on what inspires you, retro photographs can be playful, colorful, glamorous or a little quirky.

Bodyscape Boudoir
Bodyscape photography focuses less on traditional portraits and more on the shape and form of the body.
Lighting and shadows are used to highlight curves, lines and details, creating photographs that can feel almost abstract. These images are especially beautiful mixed into a larger boudoir gallery because they provide such a different perspective from traditional portraits.
Tattoo Boudoir
Your tattoos are part of your story, and boudoir photography can be a beautiful way to showcase them.
Posing and lighting can be intentionally designed to highlight particular pieces of artwork rather than accidentally hiding them. Whether you have one meaningful tattoo or extensive artwork, your session can celebrate those details as part of what makes your photographs uniquely yours.
Moody Boudoir
If you're drawn to deeper shadows and a more dramatic atmosphere, moody boudoir may be the style for you.
Rather than keeping everything bright and airy, this look uses shadows, contrast and directional light to create depth. The result can feel sophisticated, mysterious and dramatic.
You don't have to choose between light and dark photographs either. We can incorporate both looks into the same session.
Fitness Boudoir
Fitness boudoir celebrates strength as much as curves.
Sports bras, fitted tops, shorts or other athletic pieces can be incorporated into the session, or we can create photographs that simply emphasize muscle tone and strength through posing and lighting.
You don't need to be a professional athlete—or have a certain body type—to choose this style. It's simply another way to celebrate your body and something that may be important to you.
Romantic Boudoir
Romantic boudoir is soft, feminine and timeless.
Flowing fabrics, delicate lingerie, gowns and softer posing can create a dreamy look without losing the intimacy that makes boudoir special. It's a beautiful option for women who want something sensual but prefer softness over a darker or bolder style.
Glamour Boudoir
Glamour boudoir brings a more polished, fashion-inspired feeling to your session.
Statement wardrobe, beautiful lighting and more editorial posing can create portraits that feel sophisticated and luxurious. It's also a great example of how the line between boudoir and glamour photography doesn't have to be rigid—you can incorporate elements of both into one session.

Vintage Boudoir
Vintage boudoir draws inspiration from the elegance and styling of earlier eras.
Vintage-inspired lingerie, accessories, hairstyles, furniture or even a classic car can help tell the story. The finished photographs can feel timeless and glamorous without necessarily becoming traditional pinup portraits.
Ethereal Boudoir
Ethereal boudoir has a softer, dreamlike quality.
Flowing fabrics, delicate textures, natural surroundings, flowers and softer light can all contribute to the look. It's particularly beautiful for women who are drawn to romantic imagery but want something a little more whimsical and artistic.
Natural Light Boudoir
Natural light creates a softness that's difficult to duplicate.
Window light can produce everything from bright, delicate portraits to dramatic shadows depending on the time of day and how you're positioned. Natural-light boudoir often feels relaxed and intimate, making it a beautiful contrast to more heavily styled or dramatic photographs.
Can You Combine Different Boudoir Styles?
Absolutely.
In fact, combining different looks is one of the best ways to create a gallery that feels varied and personal.
You might begin in lingerie with soft natural light, change into denim for something casual, move into a darker and moodier look, and finish with something completely different. Your session doesn't have to fit neatly into a single category.
The styles are inspiration—not rules.

The best boudoir style is the one that makes you look at the photographs and recognize yourself.
You don't have to know how to pose, arrive with a perfectly planned wardrobe or decide exactly what every photograph should look like before your session. We'll talk about the styles you're drawn to and the way you want your photographs to feel, and I'll guide you through posing throughout your session.
Maybe you love romantic photographs but also want something dark and dramatic. Maybe lingerie isn't really you and you'd rather wear denim and an oversized sweater. Or perhaps you've always wanted to try something completely outside your comfort zone.
